K/1st Grade In-House

Through volunteer coaches, the aim is not only to teach participants the basic principles of the sport, but also to instill the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and individual achievement. Teams: Specific teams will not be formed. Players will practice in groups. If the coaches wish, they will group the players by ability and have informal scrimmages during the last two or three practices of the season.

Practices: Please refer to the practice schedule. Practices will consist of teaching the rules and fundamentals of the sport, development of skills as outlined in the “Coaches’ Objectives for Players”  (dribbling, passing, shooting, lay-ups, defense, etc.). Stations will be run by the coaches to practice basketball fundamentals.

Games: Games will not be played.

Volunteer Time for Parents: Parents do not need to fulfill mandatory volunteer time for this age group.

Pictures: Picture date will be posted at a later date. The entire group will be photographed together with the option for individual pictures.

2nd/3rd Grade In-House

Through volunteer coaches, the aim is not only to teach participants the basic principles of the sport, but also to instill the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and individual achievement.

Equipment: Baskets will be lowered to 9' to help the players develop a better shot. A 28.5” size basketball will be used.

Teams: This will be determined based on the number of participants in the program. Boys and girls teams may be combined.

Practices: Please refer to the practice schedule. Practices will consist of teaching the rules and fundamentals of the sport, introducing and practicing of skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, lay-ups, defense, etc.) and scrimmages.

Games:  Game days will consist of 1.5 hour time slots with the first 30 minutes for practice/game preparation. The games will consist of eight five-minute periods with a five minute half-time. If your team plays the early time slot, parents are responsible for setting up the gym. If your team plays the late time slot, parents are responsible for cleaning up the gym. This time is not considered part of your 6 hour volunteer requirements.

Parent Liaisons: There should be a parent liaison volunteer on each team. This position will be responsible for helping the coach with duties as designated by the coach. The primary duties will be to forward practice and game schedules to team parents. This position will also assist in ensuring volunteer opportunities are fulfilled.

Volunteer Time for Parents: All parents are required to volunteer a minimum of 6 hours per family or your Volunteer Check will be cashed. Your volunteer time will need to be fulfilled by working at the tournaments hosted by the Big Lake Youth Basketball Association. Your volunteer time is covered if you are a head coach, primary assistant coach, or parent liaison. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

Conduct: It is a privilege to participate in BLYBA sponsored activities. Athletes, coaches, parents, guardians and spectators who do not conduct themselves appropriately will be subject to discipline by the Board of Directors, coaches, activity coordinator and/or referees. Discipline may include permanently barring the spectator, coach, parent/guardian and/or the player(s) from any and all BLYBA activities when it is the judgment of the Board of Directors that such action is required.

Referees: The Association will attempt to assign players from the high school program to referee the in-house games. This will allow the coaches to concentrate on coaching instead of refereeing. In the event of a referee no-show, a coach/asst. coach or parent from one of the teams will need to fill in. Coaches, parents, players and spectators are not to yell or intimidate the referees in any way as they are volunteer players from the high school program.

There will be an end of the year ALL DAY Tournament for all teams, awards will be presented.

Team Pictures: Picture date is to be determined.
